1.0.- Windows Network Modeling - An introduction

Windows... who doesn't talk bad about Windows at least once in his/her live?  But all of us have to admit that software available for this ubiquitous operating system is really unbeatable. And we have to admit too that last Windows generation is really very good. XP™ is a very mature operating system and being not sectarian we have to admit it.

As a sample, just a button.  I'm going to introduce to you a very complete Network Modeling tool. Mature, well designed, very simple to use, full of options to simulate different kind of networks, and the obvious choice for Fortune's companies and big universities. It's also very, very, very expensive for people like us, poor mortals.

Fortunately a limited (at no cost) academic version exists that is good enough for our tests and for having a feeling about this incredible tool. Have a copy of OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition software at OPNET and go with me to explore together this amazing analysis tool.

Let me tell you that OPNET IT Guru is really a vast tool. Then, don't think I'm an expert using it; I'm just in the learning process and I will be very grateful to share with you, dear lectors, your experiences and discoveries using this inexorable tool.

First of all, sign up to the OPNET site and get a copy of the academic version; check your environment to be sure it supports the software to be installed. Then, install the software. Like almost Windows software the instalation process is very simple and straightforward.

Execute the software; accept the SOFTWARE AGREEMENT and you will have the following form in your screen which is the software main menu:

To continue with the explanation I'm going to use an alive tool based on Macromedia Flash Player 8; you need then a browser as Internet Explorer or Firefox.  Be sure you have installed the last version of Macromedia Flash Player; it has no cost and you can download it at Macromedia.  Download Internet Explorer and/or Firefox clicking the links above.

I'm going to record my computer screen using a 800x600 resolution. This way people using this low resolution can follow the explanation in his/her browser. Then, for them it will be just a matter to press F11 to put the browser in full screen presentation.

First part of our travel through OPNET IT Guru will be based in an example they include in the product's tutorial.  This example give us a very fast introduction to the product and its features.  It serves also for you to taste the alive presentation.  Later, I hope to travel as long as we can throughout OPNET IT Guru to learn together how to use the tool.

Taken directly from the OPNET IT Guru's tutorial a brief explanation of what we are planning to do as the first part of the trip; from the tutorial we read:

In this lesson, you plan for the expansion of a small company’s intranet. Currently, the company has a star topology network on the first floor of its office building and plans to add an additional star topology network on another floor. You will build and test this “what-if” scenario to ensure that the load added by the second network will not cause the network to fail.

Nothing more to say it's time to click the Next link below to begin working. The movie lasts 12 minutes.

Very important note:  depending on your browse configuration you probably have to authorize emergency elements to play the next page. Don't be afraid, this site is really very very safe. It runs on Linux. Do not forget to press F11 key to show the movie in full screen.
