| Implementing Differentiated Services
using Cisco routers is a lot easier than using Linux routers.
A lot easier because you don't need to have a deep knowledge of the
operating system behavior as, unfortunetely, is required when using Linux;
and also, because the available documentation is very good, well written and
very easy to follow to be understood; then, the job goes faster and better
when using Cisco. |
| Additionaly, it is not necessary to be highly
involved in the operating system queuing disciplines behavior because
Cisco uses what is called Modular QoS CLI, which is some sort
of script language that with some commands, you can, very easy, trust me,
to implement a Differentiated Service domain using Cisco. |

| Problem with Cisco is exactly what I
have just in this moment. How to access to a 7500+ Cisco router (at
least one, please...) to make some test. These are state-of-the-art Cisco
routers (some very rare jewel), very expensive and very busy devices, owned
generally by big corporations, and of course, far away from my pocket's
possibilities. Yes, Leonardo, the router is just here someone told me, but
it is very expensive, it is very busy just now and ever, and forget all your
crazy ideas about putting your dirty hands over it.... and you are not
CCIE, CCNP, yet even a poor CCNA..., get out from here. |
| |
| Finally, through some (chatting) friend of mine
that work in a technology organization, I had the opportunity to have a
very, very, limited access to one of this marvelous devices. I did some very
fast test. To short the story let me tell you something: |
| |
- I'm going to advance my explanation as long as I can. As long as I can
have access to one of these routers to validate my ideas, of course.
- I'm looking for a nice and charitable (very difficult, isn't it?)
organization that want to help me; but no charge, please, I'm really a
very poor man. If you know about one, please, let me know.
- I'm not CCIE, CCNP or even a poor CCNA, but I
think that I know what I'm doing. I'm not going to damage the router, have
this for sure!!. Also, I'm looking for a non-production device.
- What I'm trying to do is to write something similar to what I did with
Linux (have a look to Differentiated Service on
Linux HOWTO, to see that I'm a serious man, really) , but this time
using Cisco. Then having some comparisons between both solutions.
- I'm going to start with the theoretical part to make some time for a
lot of nice people to help me.
- Differentiated Service on Cisco is easy, trust me. Some people
complicate things unnecessarely to protect their own comercial interests.
If we made it on Linux, we can make it easier on Cisco,
having the money, of course (exactly what I haven't...).
